Greater Sudbury was formed in 2001 from the old city and the surrounding towns of Walden, Valley East, Rayside-Balfour, Nickel Centre, Onaping Falls and Capreol. It is the largest city in Northern Ontario and the service centre for the whole region. Lake homes on Ramsey Lake and Long Lake are minutes from the city core. Farther out, Lake Wanapitei near Skead and the Lake Panache road south of Whitefish have camps and seasonal cottages.
