Assiginack was incorporated in 1871 and is one of the oldest townships on Manitoulin. Manitowaning, its main village, sits above Manitowaning Bay, a natural harbour with a marina and good docking. The village has a museum complex on the old steamboat wharf. Outside it the township is farmland and bush, with rural communities such as Bidwell, Clover Valley and Hilly Grove. Buyers look here for bay frontage, rural acreage and access to nearby Lake Manitou.
