Towns and townships in Peterborough & the Kawarthas
Buying a cottage in Peterborough & the Kawarthas
Peterborough County surrounds the City of Peterborough, which is governed separately but is the main service centre for the whole area. The county has eight townships. The south is a mix of farmland, small towns and lakefront. The north is thinly settled forest and rock, much of it inside Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park. The Trent-Severn Waterway runs through the middle, from Rice Lake up the Otonabee River and on through the Kawartha lakes.
Buyers have two broad choices. The first is the Trent-Severn lakes, including Chemong, Buckhorn, Lower Buckhorn, Stony, Clear and Katchewanooka. They offer long-distance boating, lock villages and a mix of year-round homes and cottages. The second is the northern Shield lakes that are not on the waterway, such as Chandos, Jack, Anstruther, Catchacoma and Kasshabog. They are generally deeper and clearer, with rock and pine shorelines and far less boat traffic.
Road access is good on most southern lakes, and many homes are used all year. Island and water-access properties are common on Stony Lake and on some northern lakes, so ask about parking, docking and winter access. Nearly all waterfront relies on a well or lake intake and a septic system. Short-term rental rules differ by township. Trent Lakes, for example, has a registration by-law, so check with the township before you buy.

Peterborough & the Kawarthas questions
How far is the Peterborough area from Toronto?
The City of Peterborough is about 1.5 hours from downtown Toronto in normal traffic, using Highway 401 and Highway 115. Lakefield, Bridgenorth and Buckhorn add 15 to 40 minutes. Stony Lake is close to 2 hours. Apsley and the northern lakes such as Chandos and Jack are about 2.5 hours.
Which townships are in Peterborough County?
There are eight: Asphodel-Norwood, Cavan Monaghan, Douro-Dummer, Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, North Kawartha, Otonabee-South Monaghan, Selwyn and Trent Lakes. The City of Peterborough is separate from the county for municipal purposes. Selwyn was called Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield until 2013, and Trent Lakes was called Galway-Cavendish and Harvey, so older documents may use those names.
Is it Stony Lake or Stoney Lake?
You will see both. The spelling has been debated for years, and maps, signs, businesses and listings use either one. They are the same lake. It has three connected parts: Upper Stony Lake in the northeast, Stony Lake in the centre and Clear Lake in the southwest. When you search listings, try both spellings.
Which Peterborough County lakes are not on the Trent-Severn Waterway?
Most of the northern lakes are separate from the waterway. Chandos, Jack, Anstruther, Catchacoma, Mississagua, Kasshabog, Belmont and Round lakes all fall in this group. You cannot boat from them to the main Kawartha chain. In exchange, they see less through traffic, and most sit on the Canadian Shield with rocky shorelines.
