About Northumberland & Trent Hills

Buying a cottage in Northumberland & Trent Hills

Northumberland County lies on the north shore of Lake Ontario, east of Durham Region and west of Quinte West. It has seven municipalities. Port Hope, Cobourg and Brighton sit along Highway 401 and the lake. Hamilton Township and Alnwick/Haldimand run north over the Oak Ridges Moraine to Rice Lake. Trent Hills, in the northeast, follows the Trent River through Hastings, Campbellford and Warkworth.

There are three kinds of waterfront here. Rice Lake is a big, shallow fishing lake with cottages, resorts and year-round homes at Bewdley, Gores Landing, Harwood and Roseneath. The Trent River is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway, so a dock at Hastings or on Seymour Lake connects you to a long chain of locks and lakes. The Lake Ontario shore has beach cottages near Brighton and Presqu'ile and lake homes at Cobourg and Port Hope.

This is one of the closest cottage areas to Toronto, and most properties have year-round municipal road access. That means many waterfront homes are lived in full time. Rural properties use wells and septic systems. Rice Lake and the Trent River are shallow and weedy in places, so check the depth at the dock in late summer. On the Trent-Severn, water levels are managed and boat traffic is busiest near the locks.

Getting there: About 1 to 2 hours from Toronto.

  • Rice Lake fishing
  • Trent-Severn Waterway
  • Presqu'ile Provincial Park
  • Cobourg Beach

Northumberland & Trent Hills questions

How far is Northumberland County from Toronto?

Port Hope and Cobourg are about 1 to 1.5 hours from downtown Toronto along Highway 401 in normal traffic. Rice Lake villages such as Bewdley and Gores Landing take about 1.5 hours. Brighton, Hastings and Campbellford are closer to 1.5 to 2 hours.

Is Rice Lake in Northumberland County?

The south shore is. Rice Lake forms the northern border of Hamilton Township and Alnwick/Haldimand, with Bewdley, Gores Landing, Harwood and Roseneath on the Northumberland side. The north shore is in Peterborough County. The lake is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway and is known for muskie, bass, walleye and panfish.

Can I boat from Trent Hills to Lake Ontario?

Yes. The Trent River is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway. From Hastings at Lock 18 you travel downstream through Campbellford and a series of locks to Trenton on the Bay of Quinte. Going the other way, Rice Lake and the Otonabee River lead toward Peterborough and the Kawartha Lakes.

Are there cottages on Lake Ontario in Northumberland?

Yes, although much of the shore is farmland or in town. Cottage-style properties are found around Brighton, Gosport and Presqu'ile Bay, along the Cramahe shore near Colborne and at Lakeport and Wicklow in Alnwick/Haldimand. Cobourg and Port Hope have lakefront homes and condos close to their harbours.
