What Rideau River is like
Below Smiths Falls the Rideau Canal follows the Rideau River. Locks at Old Slys, Edmunds, Kilmarnock, Merrickville, Clowes, Nicholsons and Burritts Rapids step boats down toward Ottawa. Between the locks the river is slow and often marshy, with long no-wake reaches. Properties are mostly year-round homes on larger rural lots. Parks Canada manages the bed of the river and regulates docks. The river continues north past Kemptville into the City of Ottawa, which is outside this region.
