Smiths Falls is a canal town, administered separately from Lanark County. The Rideau River passes through the centre, and boats work through the Old Slys, Combined and Detached lock stations on their way between Ottawa and the Rideau lakes. Lower Rideau Lake begins a few kilometres upstream past Poonamalie lock. Waterfront in town is limited and fully serviced. Most buyers treat Smiths Falls as a base for shopping, marine service and the hospital while they look at the lakes nearby.
