Madawaska Valley is the heart of the upper Ottawa Valley cottage country. The township was formed in 2001 from the village of Barry's Bay and two neighbouring townships. Barry's Bay sits at the north end of Kamaniskeg Lake and Combermere is near the southeast end, where the Madawaska River flows out. The area is known for its Polish Kashubian heritage, centred on Wilno. Carson Lake lies just west of town. Barry's Bay has a hospital, groceries and hardware.
