North Bay sits on a neck of land between two different lakes. The downtown waterfront faces Lake Nipissing, with a promenade and marina. Trout Lake, on the east side, is deep and clear and supplies the city with drinking water. Waterfront homes on both lakes are often lived in year-round, and some are on city services. Neighbourhoods such as Birchaven, Trout Mills and Feronia are on or near Trout Lake. The city has a hospital, an airport and a university.
