West Nipissing was formed in 1999 from Sturgeon Falls, Cache Bay and several townships, and now covers almost 2,000 square kilometres. Sturgeon Falls, on the Sturgeon River a few kilometres above Lake Nipissing, is the main town. Cache Bay and Lavigne are on the lake itself. Waterfront includes Lake Nipissing shoreline and bays, lots on the Sturgeon River and camps on inland lakes toward Field and River Valley. More than half of residents have French as a first language.
