About Lake Huron Shore

Buying a cottage in Lake Huron Shore

This stretch of Lake Huron runs along the west edge of Lambton and Huron counties in southwestern Ontario. Highway 21, the Bluewater Highway, follows the shore and links Sarnia, Forest, Grand Bend, Bayfield and Goderich. Inland the land is flat farm country. At the water it turns to sand beach, dunes and clay bluff. The whole shore faces west, so nearly every lakefront property looks straight at the sunset.

Buyers find three main kinds of property here. There are older beach cottages on sandy lanes in places like Grand Bend, Port Franks and Ipperwash. There are bluff-top homes with stairs down to the beach between St. Joseph and Goderich. And there are river and harbour properties on the Ausable, Bayfield and Maitland rivers, where boats can be kept close to the lake. Lake Huron is big water, so most boating is day trips out of the harbours.

Almost everything here is reached by paved road and is usable all year, though some cottage lanes are private and not plowed. Many properties outside the towns rely on a septic system, and some on a well. Shoreline erosion is the main thing to check. Bluffs and dunes move over time, and conservation authorities regulate building, additions and shore protection near the lake. Ask about setbacks and past erosion work before making an offer.

Getting there: About 2.5 to 3 hours from Toronto.

Lake Huron Shore questions

How far is the Lake Huron shore from Toronto?

Plan on about 2.5 to 3 hours from downtown Toronto to Grand Bend, Bayfield or Goderich in normal traffic. Most routes follow Highway 401 or Highway 7 and 8 west, then smaller county roads to the lake. Bright's Grove, near Sarnia, is at the far end of that range or a little more.

Are the beaches on this part of Lake Huron sandy?

Many are. Grand Bend, Port Franks, Ipperwash and Pinery Provincial Park sit on a long belt of sand and dunes. Farther north, between St. Joseph and Goderich, much of the shore is clay bluff with a narrower beach at the bottom, reached by stairs from the lots above.

Should I worry about erosion when buying on Lake Huron?

It is worth checking closely. Lake levels rise and fall over the years, and bluffs and dunes can lose ground in high-water periods. Local conservation authorities regulate building near the shore. Ask for any permits, surveys and records of shore protection work, and look at how far the buildings sit from the edge.

Can I keep a boat near a cottage on this shore?

Yes, but usually in a harbour and not at your own dock. The open lake is too rough for most private docks. Marinas and harbours at Grand Bend, Port Franks, Bayfield and Goderich hold seasonal boats, and river properties on the Ausable at Port Franks can have their own docking.
