Kingston is a city, but it took in Kingston and Pittsburgh townships in 1998, so its limits reach well into the countryside. That rural north end includes the south tip of Loughborough Lake and frontage along the Rideau Canal near Kingston Mills and Joyceville. The city shore faces Lake Ontario and the start of the St. Lawrence River. Hospitals, Queen's University, VIA Rail and shopping make it the service centre for the whole region.
