What West Lake is like
West Lake is cut off from Lake Ontario by the Sandbanks dune system, a baymouth sand bar about 8 kilometres long with dunes up to 25 metres high. The village of Wellington sits at the north end, where a channel through the beach reaches Wellington Harbour. The water is sheltered and warm. Cottages and resorts sit along the east side, and many look straight across at the dunes.
