Two kinds of cottage country in one township

Trent Lakes, known as Galway-Cavendish and Harvey until 2013, covers a lot of ground in Peterborough County. In the south, Pigeon, Buckhorn and Lower Buckhorn lakes are part of the Trent-Severn Waterway, with the village of Buckhorn at the lock. Farther north, along County Road 507, deeper lakes such as Catchacoma and Mississagua sit on the Canadian Shield next to Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park. Older surveys and documents may still use the former township name.

The two halves call for different questions at an open house. On the southern lakes they are mostly about boating: what you can reach by water, how weeds and shoreline look in season, and whether docks and shoreline work had Parks Canada approval. On the Shield lakes the focus moves to access and ground. Ask whether the road is municipal, private or seasonal and who ploughs it, how deep the water is off the dock, and where the septic system sits, since thin soil over rock can limit where a system goes and what replacing one would involve.

Some northern properties share a private road with neighbours or are reached by water only. If that is the case, ask at the open house for any road agreement or association details, and for how the sellers get in during winter.
