Dawson was formed in 1997 from the former townships of Atwood, Blue, Dilke and Worthington, and it is named for the Dawson Trail, an early settlers' route west. Its communities are small, including Sleeman, Pinewood and McGinnis Creek. Basic services are in the town of Rainy River, with more in Fort Frances.
