Rainy Lake is a remnant of glacial Lake Agassiz, with more than 2,200 islands and depths that vary a lot from bay to bay. Its level is managed through the dam between Fort Frances and International Falls under an International Joint Commission board, and it set a record high in June 2022. Bass fishing is the big draw, along with walleye, northern pike, crappie and muskie, and spiny water fleas were found on the U.S. side in 2006.
